The National Institute of First Aid Trainers in conjunction with Med Response Pty Ltd are hosting a one day Stop the Bleed® workshop for first aid educators.

Following the recent updated First Aid for Management of Bleeding guideline by the Australian Resuscitation Council, first aid educators should take the opportunity to upskill in the management of tourniquets and haemostatic dressings. Specific information regarding the Stop the Bleed® program can be found here.

The six-hour workshop will include the following information,  contextualised for first aid educators:

  • Understanding national & International guidelines
  • Organisations/Associations supporting or approving guidelines – TCCC + TECC + ANZCOR + ILCOR review
  • Understanding basic anatomy & physiology relating to haemorrhage
  • Understanding how people die quicker from blood loss than from cardiac arrest
  • The 4 classes of haemorrhagic shock
  • When patients only have minutes to live
  • Haemostatic dressing – different types and the most effective one to use and why
  • Why is wound packing such an important skill
  • Correct demonstration of wound packing
  • Busting the myths on tourniquets
  • Why improvised tourniquets fail to Stop the Bleed
  • Types of commercial tourniquets (top 5 demonstrated)
  • How to prepare and store a tourniquet ready for use
  • How to correctly use a tourniquet – one handed and two handed application techniques
  • Common mistakes of tourniquet application and how to avoid them
  • How much pressure does it really take to Stop the Bleed? find out using our purpose built simulator
  • Techniques for self-application of a tourniquet
  • Modified technique for applying a tourniquet to someone else
  • What you need to consider when applying a tourniquet to a leg
  • Tourniquet application for infants, children and animals
  • Duration of tourniquet application and what to do in an extended care situation
  • How much pressure does it really take to Stop the Bleed? find out using our purpose built simulator

Certification
Students who successfully complete the workshop will be awarded the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma certificate. A Statement of Attendance will also be issued.
