HLTAID015: the 5 rights in relation to oxygen

Hi Guys,

I'm curious about your understanding of this clause in HLTAID015 in the UOC on training.gov.au

Demonstrated knowledge required.......

  • in relation to the administration of oxygen:
    • the five rights

What do you tell your students about the five rights in relation to oxygen? Thanks

The “five rights” refers to the traditional five rights of medication administration, applied to oxygen:

  1. Right person – make sure oxygen is being given to the correct person.
  2. Right medication – make sure oxygen is the appropriate treatment for their condition.
  3. Right dose – use the correct flow rate/concentration for the situation and equipment.
  4. Right route – use the correct oxygen delivery device, such as the appropriate mask.
  5. Right time – give oxygen when it is indicated and for the appropriate amount of time.

There are also expanded versions of the medication “rights”. While HLTAID015 specifically asks for the five rights, some of the additional rights are really useful when teaching oxygen:

  1. Right assessment – assess the person and make sure oxygen is appropriate for their condition.
  2. Right documentation – record what was given, when, how and the person’s response, where required.
  3. Right response – monitor the person and reassess whether the oxygen is having the intended effect.
  4. Right education – explain to the person what you are doing and why, where possible.
  5. Right to refuse – a conscious person with capacity can refuse oxygen.

For HLTAID015, I’d make sure students know the traditional five rights, as these are specifically referenced in the UOC. I’d then use the additional rights to help put safe oxygen administration into context rather than expecting students to memorise all ten.

Thank you Jessie for your reply. I am very grateful that you took the time to respond.

Can I ask, what is the origin of this information? What organisation has specified these rights?

Thanks again.

Hi Prue

The 5 rights apply to any clinician / medic administrating any drug. (Oxygen is a recognized drug)
